About Us
In the early 1950's two brothers had a vision. Jimmy and Kenny Johnson wanted to build a supermarket that would offer quality, service, and value to the people of St. Joseph. The first store was built on 22nd Street in St. Joseph, and it was given the name Green Hills. After a period of time additional stores were built in St. Joseph and the surrounding area. In 1970 the two brothers sold their stores to Fleming Company, a grocery wholesaler, at that time. The Green Hills stores were owned by Fleming until 1977.
Ray Heitman and Alan Pickard, two local young men, worked as store managers for the Fleming Company in 1977. While serving as store managers, Fleming decided to sell the stores. The men were given the opportunity to purchase the stores they were managing. Ray Heitman and his wife Debbie purchased the Green Hills stores in 1977.
In November of 2016 Matt and Jeff Heitman purchased the newest location at 7014 King Hill Ave., so customers from all parts of our community could conveniently shop at Green Hills.
Currently, these same men continue to build upon the vision started by the brothers back in the 1950’s. Ray and Debbie Heitman, along with two of their sons, Matt and Jeff Heitman, operate three Green Hills Supermarkets located at 3225 N Belt Hwy, and 7014 King Hill Ave. in St. Joseph, and 205 W. Main St., in Savannah, MO. Scott Anderson and Kevin Little head the management team of the North Belt location. In Savannah, Bob Burnett continues to lead the team. The King Hill Store is managed by Bobbi Jo Edmonson. Janice Allen operates the Green Hills at 1004 Fifth Ave., in St. Joseph.
Green Hills is a full service supermarket, offering a full line of Groceries, Fresh Meats, Farm Fresh Produce, Frozen Foods, Fresh Dairy, Deli, Bakery, Liquors, wines and beers. Green Hills, and its staff, are focused on excellent customer service, and continue to offer carry out service for all customers. Green Hills is known for quality meats, at the best prices in town.
